Past, fast and eco friendly at Ford
Ford’s Model T celebrates its 100th birthday this year and on a special heritage stand at The British International Motor Show, Ford Motor Company is displaying a 1910 version of the car to mark the occasion. Alongside the classic Model T, Ford Motor Company has a 205mph Ford GT, a 1970s Ford Escort Rally, a Mazda RX-7 and the iconic Mazda MX-5 sports car.

The main Ford stand (located next to Ford’s heritage stand in the south hall) has a strong eco theme as the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic makes its world debut, boasting CO2 emissions below 100g/km. The eco message is balanced by the hottest ever version of the Focus - the Ford Focus RS - which also premieres at the Show.

The 296bhp Focus RS, set for sale early next year, is the fifth fast Ford to break cover at a British International Motor Show. The Escort RS2000 debuted in London in 1973, followed by the Escort RS Turbo at the NEC in Birmingham in 1984. The NEC also hosted world firsts for the 1990 Escort RS Cosworth and the 2002 Focus RS.

Great British Drives from Garmin

Garmin, a market leader in personal satellite navigation systems, is inviting visitors to its three stands at the Motor Show. The stands will showcase the firms’ products as well as taking visitors on a tour of driving routes across some of the UK’s best and worst roads.

Garmin Great British Drives, situated near the west entrance to the Show is an interactive stand in which Show visitors can experience what it’s like to drive through ten routes including the Lake District and London’s own Oxford Street shopping area. One lucky person will win the opportunity to create their own Great British Drive, as well as winning a Bluetooth-enabled Garmin nüvi 860 with voice activation and a two night stay at any Ramada Jarvis hotel in England.

Garmin launched four new products at the Show including the Garmin nüvi 860 which has full menu speech control so that the driver can keep both hands on the wheel. The driver can say simple shortcut phrases such as ‘go home’ and directions will be displayed instantly. It also lets the user interact with their phone via Bluetooth.

Car maintenance made easy at The British International Motor Show

Black & Decker and Dyson aren’t names you’d normally associate with the Motor Show. However, both companies have stands at the Show showcasing new products. Dyson, which has a stand in the Shop @ Show, is showing its DC16 Animal. The hand-held cleaner was tested to ensure it picked up the most stubborn pet hair, dust and crumbs. It can be charged three times quicker than any other cordless hand-held cleaner, and uses a lithium-ion battery to give enhanced cleaning power.

Black & Decker has just launched a new automotive range comprising several new innovative products. SIMPLE START is a battery booster for any vehicle up to two litres, can be easily stored in the vehicle’s glove box and should provide enough charge to restart the engine after
15 minutes of being plugged into the cigarette lighter.

The Jump Starter, also from Black & Decker, does as it suggests but without the need for another vehicle. All you need to do is apply the clamps, turn on the ignition and crank the engine. It will provide 450 amps which should be enough to get you back on the road. To make things even safer, it has a reverse hook warning alarm which means that you can’t make a wrong connection. There are several other products available in the automotive range, including a hand-held vacuum, portable lights and a travel cooler, which heats, cools and freezes on the move.

Paperless stands at the Motor Show

While technology and design for greener motoring are the focus for many exhibitors at the British International Motor Show, Toyota and Lexus have gone further in promoting an environmental message by running paperless exhibition stands.

Rather than printing thousands of flyers, brochures and information packs for the event, the manufacturers have adopted 21st century digital solutions that save on time, money and natural resources. On press day bulky press packs were replaced by compact USB sticks. As well as containing comprehensive product information and images, these can be re-used by the journalists as a paper-free means of copying and sharing their own copy and pictures.

For other show visitors, Toyota and Lexus have consigned the glossy brochure to history. Instead, stand staff are equipped with PDAs to register personal details and organise the prompt delivery of e-brochures and other relevant information by e-mail.

Keep your cool at the Motor Show

With temperatures rising outside, visitors to the Motor Show can keep cool inside because two manufacturers are giving away cold drinks, ice-creams and ice-lollies.

Hyundai and Ford between them have given over 50,000 ice creams and ice-lollies away to visitors. Hyundai has converted one of its i10 vehicles into an ice-cream van which is attracting much attention from visitors thanks to its pink and purple livery. Ford has a juice bar in the centre and ice-lollies at the back of its stand, and there has been a constant flow of people past the window.

Careers web site launched at the Show

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has launched an innovative careers web site called Autocity at the Motor Show this week.

Autocity demonstrates that the retail motor trade is a desirable career option, and shows the diversity and choice of jobs available in the wider automotive sector. By logging onto the site, anyone, whatever age or experience, can view video case studies of real people in real jobs to help with career choices in this dynamic industry.

“We started six weeks ago with a blank screen and were delighted to be able to launch at ExCeL London, when the British International Motor Show opened its doors last week,” said Niall Campbell who was proudly demonstrating the website on the IMI stand in the Careers Zone. “At the moment it consists of 93 videos and 153 generic industry job profiles, ranging from Parts Advisor to Motorsport Technician, but the web site will continue to develop as we incorporate even more features to refine it.”

Using the concept of a city, the site features a series of automotive retail businesses which the user can explore. It is hoped that the site will be used by careers advisers as an advice and guidance tool. To visit the site, go to www.motor.org.uk/careers
